ACCIONA Infrastructure is a leading European construction company constructing and managing buildings and civil infrastructures under sustainability principles. It has an international presence in more than 30 countries and its total turnover in 2010 was ca. €3.1 billion, employing 15,800 staff. ACCIONA Infrastructure is part of ACCIONA Group, whose business lines are Construction, Real Estate, Urban-Environmental Services, Energy, Logistic and Transportation. ACCIONA’s business strategy is tightly linked to sustainability. ACCIONA uses cutting-edge technology to develop and apply the most advanced materials, components, systems and solutions for sustainability and in particular for energy efficient concepts, design, construction, operation and recycling of buildings. It applies to new and retrofitted buildings while preserving a high indoor environment quality. ACCIONA also acts as an Energy Service Company (ESCO) through its ACCIONA Energy Efficiency division. It has its own R&D Technological Centre in Madrid, composed of a multidisciplinary and international team of about 150 highly qualified researchers from a wide range of disciplines. The main research areas are Nanotechnology, New Construction Materials, ICT applied to construction and Energy Efficiency related technologies. Specifically, within the energy efficiency area, the Installations group is the one involved in GENIC project. This group is focused on the effective integration of RES on buildings, design and development of microgrids and distributed generation concepts at building and district scale. At a European level, ACCIONA plays an active role in the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) being part of its Executive Committee. It chairs the Energy Efficient Building Association (E2B A), and it is a member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group to the EC on the Energy Efficient Buildings PPP. It also participates as member of a number of construction networks and federations such as ECCREDI, ENCORD, FIEC. Within FP7 ACCIONA is currently involved in a number of projects relevant to the GENiC proposal: MEEFS (FP7-EeB NMP 2011, Acciona leader)- Multifunctional Energy Efficient Facade system for building retrofitting, EPIC HUB (FP7-EeB ICT 2012): Energy Positive Neighbourhoods Infrastructure Middleware based on Energy-Hub, HOSPILOT (CIP-ICT PSP 2008)- Intelligent Energy Efficiency in Hospitals, Cost Effective (FP7-NMP 2007): Resource- and Cost effective integration of renewables in existing high-rise buildings.
Motivation: ACCIONA’s strong focus on sustainability and its current work on increasingly powering buildings by renewable energy sources make the participation in GENiC very interesting. In particular the link between energy management and renewable power supply is an active area of research for ACCIONA. ACCIONA is also interested in supporting users in the decision making process on how best to use renewable energy in powering buildings.
Related Competences: The R&D Technology Centre in Madrid has specific expertise in system integration of renewable energy sources. The Centre has developed a number of demonstration sites. It has also expertise in ICT system integration in the energy efficient building space.
Role in the Project: ACCIONA will lead WP6 Demonstration. In the demonstration work package Acciona will coordinate the demonstration of the expected impact that it is achievable to power data centres by 80% renewable energy sources if clever integrated energy and IT load management platforms are available. Acciona will also be involved in WP1 Requirements, Architecture and Process, where Acciona will contribute the requirements, architecture and lead the analysis if the renewable power input requirements. Acciona will also contribute to WP2 in the modelling task and in WP4 in the decision support tools task. Acciona will strongly contribute to in WP7 Integration and Validation to the overall integration and validation activities. Acciona will also contribute to dissemination and exploitation of project results in WP7.
